Without the right materials, packing is next to impossible. Before you get started, you'll need the basics, like sturdy boxes, packing tape, packing paper, and bubble wrap. Invest in a thick marker as well, for clear labeling. 

Always pack one room at a time. It may seem counterintuitive – after all, shouldn't you start with the least important goods in any room? – but it's the best, easiest technique. Staying organized is a big part of moving, and going room by room can keep like items together.

Wrap fragile items in paper or bubble wrap before placing them into boxes. Be careful to separate heavy items to make sure boxes are easy to carry. No matter what you're packing, labeling is important; be specific and write largely and clearly.

Moving yourself is often cheaper, but can be an extreme burden, especially if you're moving from one large home to another. Truck rentals and packing are cheaper without professional assistance, but it can take a significant investment in time and energy. Pack everything in advance before renting a truck, and do your best to recruit friends and family to help with the manpower. Your move will likely save you quite a bit, but staying organized will be a challenge.

Hiring movers can take the stress out of moving, letting someone else do the hard part while you worry about the more important details. Movers can do it all, packing for you, loading a truck, driving it to your new property, and unloading it at your front door. You'll pay for the convenience, however; the cost of moving can be quite steep, especially if you're moving a large house a long distance.
